When you turn on your Chromebook, it automatically connects to a single wireless network, among several active Wi-Fi networks that you’ve previously connected to, based on a priority order. But one question still lingers: How can one change the order of preferred Wi-Fi networks on a Chromebook. By default, your Chromebook should connect to the closest Wi-Fi network, but sometimes that is not the case as you may notice that it has connected to a farther Access Point, which has a weaker signal compared to the other available networks.
Unfortunately, on some systems, Chrome Operating System places slower Wi-Fi connections higher in the priority list than faster ones. Luckily for you, by tweaking a couple of settings, you can determine which connection takes precedence when more than one is available. This article will take you through the steps you can take to prioritize your Wi-Fi connections.
How to Prioritize Your Preferred Wi-Fi Network
If you have many Wi-Fi networks in your area, you can set one to have precedence over another using the following steps:
- Make sure that you are connected to the Wi-Fi Network you wish to prefer. Before trying to connect to a Wi-Fi network, ensure that you are within range of a wireless access point and your wireless card is enabled. Go to the bottom-right corner of your desktop > click the status bar > click “No Network”. If your wireless is disabled, the next window will notify you so. To turn wireless on, click “Turn Wi-Fi on” at the bottom-left section of the window. The system will search for wireless connections that are in range and display them after a few seconds. Click the particular network connection you wish to join. If the wireless network that you have selected is password-protected, Chrome will prompt you to enter the password. Next click “Connect” and the system will connect to the wireless network of your choice. You should typically connect your Chromebook to the Wi-Fi network with the strongest signal strength before proceeding to the next steps.
- Open Chromebook’s “Settings” screen. To do this click the tray at the bottom-right corner of your screen and click the gear-shaped “Settings” button.
- Navigate to the “Network” section, click “Wi-Fi” and then click the name of the network that you are connected to in the list.
- Click on the checkbox “Prefer this Network” then click “Close”. This network will now be preferred by your Chromebook over other ones when automatically connecting to Wi-Fi networks.
How to view your Preferred Networks
To see your preferred networks in the order that they are prioritized, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to the “Settings” screen. To do this, click the tray at the bottom-right corner of your screen and click the gear-shaped “Settings” button.
- In the “Network” section, click the “Wi-Fi Network” option and then click “Preferred Networks” at the bottom of the menu. This should display a list with all the Wi-Fi networks your Chromebook remembers. Your Chromebook prioritizes the networks at the top of the list.
