How to Enable Android File Browsing in Chrome OS

Chrome OS has been integrating further with Android features – access to Android apps and the Google Play store was a great addition some time ago, and its been recently reported that Chrome OS will soon unveil integration with Android Messages.

The only major nag that’s been plaguing all this Chrome OS – Android integration is the fact that it was extremely difficult to access Android files on Chrome OS. Android files do not appear by default in the Chrome OS file manager.

Google has finally addressed this by releasing a new Chrome flag toggle – its not perfect, of course. By enabling the flag toggle, you’ll be able to see certain files hosted in the Android section of the Chrome OS file manager, like images. However, if you want to access other files like files stored within the Android file structure, you’ll need a file explorer specifically for Android.

Right now, this flag toggle only works on Chrome OS Developer Channel (Chrome 68), but it should be rolled out to more channels soon.

To enable the Android file flag in Chrome OS, enter the following site into Chrome’s omnibox:

chrome://flags/#show-android-files-in-files-app

Now change the dropdown to “Enabled”, and restart Chrome OS.

Done!
