Why are NVMe PCIe M.2 SSDs better?

M.2 and SATA pretty much are the proof of the fact that no matter how hard SATA tries to update itself it will still lack against what the M.2 has to offer. One could even say that this is going to be the future for SSD drives.

Maximum speeds for SATA drives are clocking at 6Gbps or 750Mb/s. All the while NVMe PCie M.2 SSDs can clock in at 1GB/s on the least powerful units with X2 drives. This already is overkill but the peak of these drives is pretty much a deciding factor, with 31.5 GB/s with X4 drives.

SATA and mSATA drives are still around for those who want to go for the budget builds. Especially for those who want to upgrade old builds or increase the capability of laptops and outdated Desktops.

SATA drives and their architecture is no slouch either, with the technology withstanding over 20 years of lifetime. The longevity of the SATA architecture is pretty much a great guarantee that the system will support any and all SATA and mSATA drives that get plugged into the computer, as such, these drives are also pretty cheap.

SATA basically exists nowadays as a legacy sort of Drive standard that will definitely continue decreasing in price as faster options reach the market and continue improving on some capabilities. This isn’t strange as the computer industry will continue to move forward and achieve greater heights in terms of availability and performance.

However, M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs will now make their own stand thanks to the amount of powerful features such as the portability they offer thanks to the form factor. Another advantage is definitely the read/write speeds as stated before.

PCIe NVMe SSDs will often be considered as a great alternative for those and more reasons. Especially for the fact that some SATA to PCIe adapters can actually help some SATA drives to perform better under the right circumstances.

However, it should also be noted that some PC gamers might not exactly find what they are seeking for in terms of performance when it comes to PCIe VS. SATA drives. Games themselves aren’t realty that affected by aren’t really affected by the performance of an SSD like a lot of people think they are. However, the faster writing and read speeds are actually better suited for programs that require them such as video editors.

The real powerhouses that carry games will always be the graphics card and the processor themselves. All SSDs will help to do is faster loading times and this really isn’t a tangible difference in almost all of the cases. As such, these SSDs aren’t really suited for gaming themselves and are more of a plus than anything for PC gamers.
