What are the Differences between i7 7700k and 8700k Processors?

The first and most obvious difference between the two Processors is definitely the Generational Increment that they possess. The Intel Core i7 7700K is a Generation 7 Intel Core Processor. All the while the Intel Core i7 8700K is a Generation 8 Intel Core Processor. The latter offers more benefits that the former doesn’t.

Generation Changes as explained here usually come with updates on the structure of the processors themselves. As many PC enthusiasts might be able to tell the user, the higher the generation is, the better the specifications in terms of voltage, speed and overall performance are shown in the product itself.

The second and also very important difference is the CPU architecture itself. The i7 8700K offers Coffee Lake CPU architecture. The integrated graphics on Coffee Lake chips allow support for DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 connectivity. Coffee Lake natively supports DDR4-2666 MHz memory in dual channel mode when used with i7 CPUs.

The i7 7700K offers the Kaby Lake architecture. It’s essentially the same structure as the Coffee Lake architecture but it also has a bit less perks and a graphics architecture that allows performance improvements in 3D Rendering tasks and 4K video playback.

The amount of cores is also different when comparing the two Processors. The i7-8700K, thanks to its Coffee Lake architecture, offers a whopping 6 Cores with 12 logical threads. Meanwhile the i7-7700k only offers 4 Cores and 8 Logical Threads.

The i7 8700K is also known for being very privy in terms of RAM memory support. With DDR4-2666 memory sticks being the only supported memory by this Processor. On the other hand, Intel core i7 7700K offers support for DDR4-2133 and DDR3-1333/1600 memory chips.

In terms of Processor Graphics. Intel Core i7 7700K offers the Intel HD Graphics 630 version. All the while the Intel 8700K offer the Intel UHD Graphics 630 version. Both of these architectures don’t really stand out against what Graphic Cards themselves can offer, though. High-end Gaming, Video Editing and other features will still require the user to buy a Graphics Card.

Clock Speeds are also a major difference between the two processors as well. The Intel Core i7 7700K offers a Maximum Clock speed of 4.20Ghz. All the while the Intel Core i7 8700K offers a smaller Clock Speed of 3.70Ghz.

While this may look like it works against the 8700K, once we get to Overclock Speeds everything becomes quite different. Both the 8700K and the 7700K have Hyper Threading and Unlocked for Overclocking specifications. With the 7700K reaching a max speed of 4.40Ghz while the 8700K offers a 4.70Ghz Max Speed.

Intel Core i7 8700K and 7700K Benchmarks Comparison

On the following segment we’re going to see a graph that shows the differences in benchmark performances with Cinebench and some games in general with the Intel Core i7 8700K and the Intel Core i7 7700K.

As a closing remark, it should be noted that the Intel Core i7 Processors will always favour the users who prefer to use the processors for heavy duty applications. Video Editors will find themselves reaping the benefits of using a Processor like this more than gamers will.

However, it can also be pointed out that some gamers might actually benefit from the increase in frame rates and the ease of detail some games can offer. As such, whether or not an Intel Core i7 Processor is fit for you is completely left up in the air and becomes a matter of personal preferences.
