When you create a password reset disk, a userkey.psw file is created in the root directory of the USB flash drive that you use, and this file holds the key to the specific Windows 10 user account that you created the password reset disk for. It should be noted that a password reset disk is only good for the Windows 10 user account it was created for – kind of like how only one specific key can open a specific lock. Also, password reset disks can only be created for local user accounts on a Windows 10 computer, not Microsoft accounts. To create a password reset USB for a user account on a Windows 10 computer, you need to:
Sign into the local user account you want to create the password reset disk for.
Connect the USB flash drive that you want to turn into a password reset disk into the computer. Turning the USB flash drive into a password reset disk won’t format it, so you don’t have to worry about losing any of the data that’s already on the flash drive.
Hold the Windows Key and Press X. From the Win X Menu, choose Control Panel. then locate and click on User Accounts.
In the User accounts window, click on Create a password reset disk in the left pane.
When the Forgotten Password Wizard starts up, click on Next. Select the USB flash drive that you want to turn into a password reset disk from the dropdown menu. Click on Next. Type in the current password for your local user account. Click on Next. If an “Overwrite Existing Disk?” window pops up, click on Yes. Once the process has been completed, click on Next. Click on Finish.
Remove the newly created password reset disk and be sure to keep it safe for when that rainy day on which you forget your user account’s password comes knocking.
