Are NVMe PCIe M.2 Drives Compatiable with Macs?

This is going to be quite the complicated subject to discuss. The simple answer is “NO. It doesn’t work.” However, when you take a lot of things into context, the answer becomes a bit blurrier and we get to see the technical aspects of the entire question.

Let’s start by saying that Apple uses their own PCIe port which is often an X2 port, especially for Macbook units. Not only is it outdated but it also comes with its own SSD and the drivers that the Mac computer runs often are only compatible with that SSD and nothing else.

However, it’s been often rumored that the latest High Sierra updates have actually offered an ampler NVMe interface update that can actually accept third party NVMe drives to work. This really hasn’t been confirmed by many people in the scene, however. So this is a thread that we have to approach carefully.

The video shown below pretty much shows the differences between drives. Like mentioned before, this is a rather complicated matter to tackle as the answer becomes blurrier and blurrier. Let’s just say that it’s not possible for any non-tech savvy people to make these sort of M.2 Drives work.

I want to Upgrade! How do I transfer my data from another Disk Drive?

A lot of people who often go and get the SSDs do so because they are completely sick and tired of the prolonged Boot Times and want to get to download MIDIs as fast as possible. However, a huge portion of users who buy SSDs and own an HDD or something of the sort aren’t tech savvy enough to know how to migrate their data from another disk drive.

It’s often suggested to just install a new version of Windows on the SSD while relaying the HDD to store data. However, this also presents a problem in and off itself because the HDD will still keep the old Windows files and take up a huge amount of space that could be used for other files.

As such, another thing that could be done is the migration of the data. Users can migrate Windows 10 system to new SSD by cloning the system drive with the help of disk imaging software. This is done in multiple ways and can help a lot of users get things done as quick as possible.

Existing Disk Drives can be cloned with various utility programs like CloneZilla, TrueImage, EaseUS Todo Backup, among a wide array of other pieces of software. This basically allows people to migrate their Operative System without needing to go over the complicated process of reinstalling the entire operative system all over again and having to reorganize the disk drives.

It’s important to note as well that there are also a few things that need to be considered before doing this, however. First off, users need to back up their files on a Cloud Server or in a personal drive before deleting them entirely from the old Disk Drive. This is done in order to keep the Windows installation small enough to fit on the SSD.

After the installation of the OS is done, it’s all just a matter of restoring the files again from the backup. This is basically the easiest way of migrating the Operative System from the old drive to the new SSD. However, it should also be noted that it requires users to be tech savvy and any files that didn’t get properly backed up will be lost forever.
