BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. It’s a set of code that resides on a chip on yours system’s motherboard. When a computer boots up, it looks in the chip for BIOS for instructions on where to find the operating system and among many other things, BIOS also further facilitates communication between the operating system and the hardware.
Like drivers and softwares, updates for BIOS are also released occasionally, but you should have a very good reason for updating your BIOS, also called flashing your BIOS. Unless you are having a specific issue like compatibility while installing new hardware that is resolvable through BIOS update, only then you should update your BIOS.
First you’ll have to know the version of current BIOS installed on your system. To update your BIOS on your Lenovo computer/laptop, you will first have to check which version of BIOS is currently running on your system.
Hold the Windows key + R. In the run window, type msinfo32 and press Enter. System Information window will open. In the window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left pane. In the larger right pane, locate BIOS Version/Date. The value against it will be your BIOS version. Note it down.
Value against OS will be your Operating system. Value against System type will be it’s bitness. If its x64, you have a 64 bit windows. If its x86, you have a 32 bit windows. Value against “System Mode” will be your exact system model. Note all of this, you’ll need it in further steps.
Method 1: Updating BIOS Through Windows
Go to support.lenovo.com. Click on Detect My Product. An agreement will appear, click I Agree. Lenovo Service Bridge will start downloading. Install the downloaded file. You will get a warning about installing the application. Click “Install”. It will start downloading and get installed automatically. The web page will automatically redirect to your products page.
If for some reason you can’t get the above method to work, simply type your laptop’s or desktop’s model under “Search Products”. Search results will appear in a drop down below. Now select your exact system model in the results.
Support page for your model will be opened. Scroll down a little.
Under “Looking for drivers or software for your machine? Pick a Component below to begin.” Select UEFI/BIOS from the drop down menu against “Component”. Select your Operating system you previously noted against “Operating system”.
In the search results below, executable and/or bootable cd (not available for all models) of latest BIOS will be available.
If the Version and Date of BIOS available for download is newer than the one you have currently, then click the download icon next to the BIOS update utility.
Run the downloaded file. Follow the on screen instructions. Click yes for any all User Account Control warning that appear from now on till you are done with this guide. After extraction, make sure the check is placed for the “Install BIOS Utility now.” option. Click Finish.
The update utility will now start. Select “Update BIOS” and click next.
Follow the on-screen instructions. Do not turn off your computer or laptop in any case during the updating process. In case of laptop, make sure the battery is present in the laptop and the AC adapter is connected with it the whole time.
Enter your serial numberand click go.
Below in Download options, click on Get drivers, software & firmware.
Method 2: Thorough Bootable USB
If some reason you can’t boot into Windows and still want to update your system, then worry not, as you can do it by booting from the USB.
To check the version of BIOS, power on the target system and tap repeatedly F1 or F2 for some models to go into BIOS setup. Once in BIOS setup, search for “BIOS Revision” and value against it would be your BIOS version. If you have a modern laptop, you’ll have to press the Lenovo key to access BIOS menu while your laptop is powered off, which is usually besides the power button on the front. A menu will open, and select BIOS setup from it
Use the above given method in Method 1 to check if newer version of the BIOS is available. If in the results you can see “BIOS Update Bootable CD iso” whose BIOS version is newer than you already have then download it. If there is no such thing, then simply download “BIOS Update Utility for Windows”.
Connect the USB you’re going to make bootable on another system you have access too. Hold Windows Key + E to open windows explorer. Back up the data if any from the USB.
Download Rufus from this link. We will use it to make the USB bootable. Open the downloaded file.
Select your USB under Device.
If you have downloaded “BIOS Update Bootable CD iso” then select FAT32 in the drop down menu under File system and select ISO Image next to “Create a bootable disk using”. Click the CD Icon to browse and select the downloaded file. Click Start. Confirm any message that appears. Click close when the process is complete.
Connect the USB to the target system, power it on and keeping tapping F12 until you see the Boot menu. If F12 doesn’t’ works, it may be different for your model, you’ll have to check the way to boot from USB from Lenovo’s website. If you have a modern laptop, you’ll have to press the Lenovo key to access BIOS menu while your laptop is powered off, which is usually besides the power button on the front. A menu will open, and select boot menu from it.
Select your USB from the list, and follow the instructions on-screen.
If you have downloaded a simple “BIOS Update Utility for Windows” file, then next to “Create a bootable disk using” select FreeDOS. Click Start.
Click close when the process is complete.
Run the downloaded file “BIOS Update Utility for Windows”. Follow the on screen instructions. Copy the file path it shows similar to “C:\Drivers\Flash\j9uj22ww”. After extraction, uncheck “Install BIOS Utility now.” option. Now press Windows + E. Paste the previously copied file path in the address bar up above. Copy everything form the opened folder to the USB you just made bootable.
Connect the USB to the target system, power it on and keeping tapping F12 until you see the Boot menu. If F12 doesn’t’ works, it may be different for your model, you’ll have to check it from Lenovo’s website. If you have a modern laptop, you’ll have to press the Lenovo key to access BIOS menu while your laptop is powered off, which is usually besides the power button on the front. A menu will open, and select boot menu from it
Select your USB from the list.
A command prompt window will appear. Type C: and press Enter.
Type dir to list the files on the flash drive.
Now type WINUPTP –s and press Enter.
Follow the on-screen instructions. Do not turn off your computer or laptop in any case during the updating process. In case of laptop, make sure the battery is present in the laptop and the AC adapter is connected with it the whole time.
