All versions of the Windows Operating System, including Windows 10, are prone to abruptly shutting down in the middle of functions completely out of nowhere, at which point they display a blue screen with text on it that, to some extent, explains what happened. The blue screen that is displayed is widely referred to as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). There are a ton of different errors that can cause a Windows 7/8/10 computer to suddenly shut down and then display a BSOD, and one of these errors is the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error.

A DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD (as depicted in the image below), simply states that the affected computer has encountered an issue and will forcefully reboot and specifies that the encountered error is the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error. The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error is caused by one (or, in some rare cases, more) problematic or defective drivers. The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error can occur at any time during use and there is no way to predict when the error will trigger a BSOD.

However, thankfully, a computer affected by the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error can be cured if the drivers causing the problem are uninstalled and then reinstalled. If you want to get rid of the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD, here’s what you need to do:

First and foremost, you are going to have to reboot the affected Windows 8 or 10 computer into Safe Mode. In order to do this if you are able to get to the start screen then click the Power icon on the lower right corner whilst Holding SHIFT key and choose Restart.

If you cannot get to the Start Screen then reboot the system, and interrupt it at the Windows logo screen until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair option you may have to interrupt the restart process 2-3 times and this has to be done when you see the Windows logo screen.

After the Preparing Automatic Repair message, it should take you to Advanced Options from there choose Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Startup Settings -> (wait for the system to reboot), after the reboot choose Option 4 by pressing 4 on the keyboard to start into Safe Mode.

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista then Restart your computer and repeatedly tap F8 until you see the Advanced Boot Menu. If you do not see this menu, start over again and repeatedly tap F8 key on your keyboard until you see this. When you see this select Safe Mode. You will be able to login into safe mode fine.

On the Advanced Boot Menu, select Safe Mode using the arrow keys on your keyboard. Hit Enter to start computer in Safe Mode. The picture below shows Safe Mode only, but you need to select “Safe Mode with Networking”

Once the computer has booted up in Safe Mode, log in to the computer and press the Windows Logo key + R to launch a Run.

Type devmgmt.msc into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Device Manager.

Expand each of the categories in the Device Manager one by one, searching for the defective driver(s). The defective driver(s) will have a small yellow triangle containing a black exclamation mark on the bottom-right side of their icons. When you locate a defective driver, right-click on it and click on Uninstall and then go through the uninstallation wizard to successfully uninstall the driver.

Once you have uninstalled every single defective driver, restart the computer.

When your computer boots up, you need to go on and reinstall the defective drivers that you uninstalled. Any defective drivers that came built-in to the computer and have been uninstalled will be reinstalled by the computer automatically. However, any and all drivers for third-party devices will have to be reinstalled manually by downloading them from the websites of the manufacturers of the devices they belong to and then installing them.

When reinstalling third-party defective drivers that have been uninstalled, be sure to download the latest versions of the drivers that are available for the computer.

Once all problematic drivers have been reinstalled, the computer should no longer shut down abruptly and display the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD.
